MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are investigating a homicide in southwest Memphis that happened overnight.

According to authorities, officers were called to the 3500 block of West Horn Lake Road near Brantley Road around midnight after a gray Ford crashed into an abandoned house.

Neighbors told WREG’s Melissa Moon that the sound of the crash was so loud they thought it was an explosion. Their house even shook. They didn’t realize until police arrived that there was someone still inside and they had been shot.

Family and friends identified the victim as Wayne Johnson. They said he leaves behind several children and the whole family is grieving.

Authorities have not said if the shooting happened on this street. Neighbors said they did not hear any gunshots. If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
