PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — The former boyfriend of a woman set on fire and killed in Panola County five years ago was killed in an early morning shooting in Mississippi.
The Panola County coroner confirmed 33-year-old Travis Sanford was shot on Woodruff Street in Courtland early Friday morning. He died from his injuries sometime later.
One man was taken into custody and police detained another person for questioning. Sanford and the suspect had reportedly been inside the victim’s home for some hours prior to the shooting at 7:30 a.m.
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and authorities had to go track him down.
There were two children inside the home at the time, but they were not hurt.
District Attorney John Champion confirmed to WREG’s Shay Arthur that Sanford was the former boyfriend of Jessica Chambers, the 19-year-old who was set on fire and murdered in Panola County back in December 2014. He was in prison at the time of her murder.
Quinton Tellis was tried twice for her murder. Both ended in mistrials.
