UPDATE: According to MPD, the suspect, 51-year-old Bobby Freeze, has been charged with Criminal Attempt Second Degree Murder and Employment of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.

ORIGNAL:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man was rushed to the hospital after being shot and crashing into a charter school in Summer Avenue early Monday morning.

According to police, officers were called to 4841 Summer Avenue and found that a man occupying a van had struck a building. The man had also been shot, police said.

The victim was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition. One person was detained by police.

Witnesses believed the shooting stemmed from an attempted theft in a nearby business parking lot near a popular breakfast restaurant.

“It’s actually pretty shocking. The Pancake Shop is always busy. It’s just, I couldn’t even believe it,” said Kayla Wallace, who said she’s worked in the shopping center for the last six years.

The parking lot usually packed with hungry diners ready to eat at the different restaurants in the strip mall.
