MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are looking for the gunmen responsible for a shooting that left a father dead in a Frayser neighborhood.

People who live on Madewell Street tell us a spray of shots killed a man who didn’t even live there.

“I don’t go to my car without my pistol with me,” neighbor Ron Ricketts said.

He says hearing gunshots in his neighborhood is normal. But what he heard Sunday afternoon when he and his wife were grilling in the back of his house was something that hit close to home.

“We heard the shots. ‘Pow, pow, pow.’ We got up against the back of the house in case there were more shots,” Ricketts said.

His long-time neighbor died from an illness last month.

Her son, who family identified as John Hizer, was fixing her house to sell it. He was just mowing the lawn when he was killed.

“Just a few minutes before the gunshots he was mowing the backyard,” Ricketts said. “I noticed he didn’t finish the backyard, so I don’t know what transpired after he quit mowing the lawn. But it’s tragic.”

Monday, police confirmed that Hizer, age 49, was the victim.

We don’t know he didn’t ended up in the front of the house when he didn’t finish the backyard, but Hizer’s family says he was shot in the head.

They say he wouldn’t be the intended target like this, which is why they are stunned and saddened. Especially after just losing his mother.

Neighbors tell us they heard several rounds of shots, which sounded like they came from two separate guns.

Ricketts has lived here for 28 years and is overwhelmed with the amount of unnecessary violence.

He says, sadly, it’s become part of the way he lives.

“God says our time is always, and we have prepared for that. But it’s kind of dangerous around here with shots going off all the time. We’re kind of used to it, but you stay on guard all the time.”
