MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police remained at Chickasaw Middle School for hours Tuesday afternoon after a man was shot in the park behind the school in the 4000 block of Westmont in Southwest Memphis.
The victim, who police described as a young adult male, had no connection to the school, which had already dismissed when the gunshots sounded.
Paramedics worked for about an hour to stabilize the victim before airlifting him to Regional Medical Center. He’s now listed as extremely critical.
“We don’t know the circumstances of what happened, but we do have a couple of witnesses we’re holding onto,” said Col. Mickey Williams, with The Memphis Police Department.
Police also said they detained a possible suspect, but parents in the area remain concerned about the constant threat of violence.
“It’s very concerning, like, it’s pitiful. These kids be outside like this every day, all day. And they got to duck, dodge bullets in broad daylight,” said one parent.
