(Memphis) A Memphis man is in jail on no bond, accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend.
Police say Xavier Becton shot and killed her last night at the Preserves apartments near Hacks Cross.
The victim’s family is devastated and doesn’t believe Becton’s story about what happened.
Deputies say Becton turned himself in at a KFC on Winchester, claiming the shooting was accidental.
Family of Tierria Sims gathered at her apartment Friday to pack-up her stuff.
“To get that phone call, it hurts,” said her 17-year-old nephew, Aaron Bailey.
Police say Sim’s ex-boyfriend showed-up to her apartment complex Thursday day night and murdered her in front of her dog.
The family says she was walking Madison when Becton confronted her then shot her.
He turned himself in minutes later, telling police they wrestled over the gun and it just went off.
His story doesn’t add up with what neighbors say.
“The neighbor heard her say ‘please don`t shoot me’,” said her aunt, Dorothy Sims.
“What are your feelings toward him today?” asked Reporter Sabrina Hall.
“Hatred. Hatred because he took a precious thing away from us, “ said Bailey.
Tierria’s nephew says Tierria broke-up with Becton months ago after a two-year relationship but he wouldn’t leave her alone, “He would call her time and time again.”
Aaron never thought something like this could happen.
“I would like to know why,” said her aunt. “Why did you take her life? She had a life ahead of her.”
Tierra’s aunt showed WREG a picture of her from high school.
“That’s her. That`s her smile, always,” she said.
Murdered at age 36, she leaves behind a large Memphis family and a dog that loved her.
“I just want people to know that she was kind and loving and she was always a phone call away,” said Bailey.
Becton is charged with second degree murder but the family wants to see the district attorney increase the charge to first degree.
He is expected in court November 4.
