MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mother who reportedly stabbed her daughter in the chest and then disappeared on Friday has been taken into custody.
WREG is working to learn where and how Officers captured Lazette Sanders late Friday evening.
According to Police, a family from Chicago rented a bus, and with more than 30 members in tow, drove down to Whiteville for the funeral of a family member.
The woman’s 16-year-old daughter decided to stay outside the Super 8 Motel room she was sharing with her in order to hang out with her family.
When she came inside, the daughter flipped on the light in the bathroom and began to change into her nightclothes.
The girl told police that’s when her mother, Lazette Sanders, became upset, and yelled at her to turn off the light.
While trying to explain, the woman reportedly jumped out of bed saying, ‘ I’m going to kill you’ and rushed at her daughter with a pair of scissors.
She stabbed the girl in the chest, puncturing one of her lungs.
According to Police, the mother hid the scissors after the attack and told her family she didn’t know what happened.
The young girl was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center, while Police questioned her mother on the drive to the hospital.
When they arrive, Police learned what happened from the daughter, but when they went to arrest the other woman, she had disappeared.
“We believe she fled due to the fact she knew we were going to interview the daughter,” said a police spokesperson. “She attempted several times to try to get to the room, trying to beat us to the room. She has no ties to the area that we know of, and no money that we know.”
WREG was told the 16-year-old is still at the hospital where she was placed under guarded watch for her protection.
Child Services has been called.
The family that drove down with the mother and daughter returned to Chicago.
Police also told us, the mother is wanted for aggravated child abuse, attempted first degree murder, and tampering with evidence.
