MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was transported to the hospital in critical condition after being shot by police following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Gill in South Memphis, Memphis Police said.
Police said the driver exited the vehicle and fled after he was pulled over at 6:30 p.m.
Officers gave chase, a confrontation occurred and the driver was shot. He was transported to the Regional Medical Center where he is being treated.
WREG spoke to the man’s mother who identified him as Martavious Banks, 25. He’s a father of two.
She said police shot him in the back and she’s furious. Both the mother and the victim’s girlfriend say Banks didn’t own a gun.
On Monday, police told WREG they recovered a gun.
The officer involved in the shooting has been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

At 6:30 p.m. officers conducted a traffic stop at 1258 Gill. An armed male driver got out of the vehicle and fled. Officers gave chase and a confrontation occured. The driver was shot. He was xported critical to ROH.
