MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A neighbors-helping-neighbors situation in Whitehaven may have helped save a life. Kewan Buford is charged with domestic assault, and police say it took a group effort to get him into custody.
A neighbor, a security guard, and several police officers helped catch Buford. The victim told police a few text messages sparked the fight that broke out at the Peppertree apartments, located just off Eastwind road.
That’s when security officers helped by calling police after the victim said Buford punched her in the face and choked her because he didn’t like a message he saw on her phone.
Tony Jones also lives at the apartment complex. He wasn’t around for the fight, but says violence against women is just wrong.
He said, “I don’t have any respect for any dude who beats on women.”
Neighbors told police they could hear her screaming in pain, and that gave police more evidence. Jones is glad folks in the area decided to step in to help her.
Buford made a run for it after the alleged fight. Police sent out a call that he was on the loose, and another officer found him a quarter mile down the road at a vacant apartment and took him into custody.
Later, the security officers told police Buford wasn’t supposed to be on the property at all. He’s now charged with assault, evading arrest, and criminal trespass.
Jones tells WREG he hopes this send a message to other men that this kind of violence isn’t acceptable.
“I’ve got sisters, mothers grandmothers; I want to keep them out of harms way, too,” he said.
Buford is being held on $2,500 bail.
