SUNSET, La. — One police officer was wounded and taken to a hospital after a shooting Wednesday in Sunset, State Patrol Master Trooper Brooks David said.
The Associated Press reported the officer and one of the stabbing victims have now died. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz identified the victims as Officer Henry Nelson, 51, and Shameka Johnson, 40. He said two other women also were stabbed: Johnson’s sister, Shurlay Johnson, 34, and Courtney Jolivette, the wife of the man who is accused in the attacks.
Guidroz said the suspect, Harrison Lee Wiley Jr., 35, is in custody after he barricaded himself briefly in an Exxon station after driving his car through the front door.
Three people in the store escaped and there were no hostages, the sheriff said.
The suspect had some irritation to his eyes from tear gas. He was unhurt otherwise. He gave up once the SWAT team breached the office door behind which he was hiding.
The incident started as a domestic disturbance, State Sen. Elbert Guillory told CNN affiliate KATC.
Sunset is a town of about 3,000 people located some 15 miles north of Lafayette, Louisiana.
