CORINTH, Miss. — A Corinth, Mississippi police officer, is recovering after being shot twice early Wednesday morning.
Officer Kevin Parker, Jr. was responding to a prowler call on Bell School Road when he was shot around 4:40 a.m.
The officer said a man ran in front of his car, at which time he stopped.
Parker said he told the man to stop, at which time the man charged him.
According to Corinth Police Chief Ralph Dance, the man was able to get his hand on the officer’s gun during a struggle and turn it on him.
Officer Parker, who was able to keep hold of the gun, was shot once in the chest and once in the shoulder.
The officer’s vest stopped the bullet to his chest and saved his life according to Dance.
In an interview, Chief Dance said the vest was only bought two months ago and came from a company where the officer’s father is employed.
Officer Parker, who has been on the force since March, is listed in good condition at a Tupelo hospital.
Police are using a vague description to search for the suspect.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and the U.S. Marshals Service are helping.
Prayers to the @CorinthPD officer who was shot this morning but is in stable condition. Speedy recovery brother. Suspect not in custody
