SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Earle Farrell, with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, confirms authorities were on the scene of a barricade in the 7000 block of Birdwood in Southeast Shelby County Wednesday night.

The barricade started when deputies tried to serve a felony warrant at 5 p.m.

The man in the home refused to come out and barricaded himself for nearly four hours.

The man told deputies he considers himself a Moorish sovereign citizen and says American law does not apply to him.

They were forced to bring out the SWAT team and negotiators to get him to finally come outside.

They didn’t know if he was armed, so they were very careful – bring in K-9 units and shutting down the street.

All of the actin caught attention to hose living near the barricade situation.

“I didn’t see anything. My grandma just told me something was happening out here, and they had the street blocked off. So, I just came out here and saw what was going on,” a neighbor said.

In fact, many neighbors came outside and stopped to ask deputies questions about the presence in their neighborhood as nearby homes were evacuated.

Many residents are glad things ended peacefully.

Deputies have not released the name of the suspect.
