MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In East Memphis, a friendly soccer match got heated after a security guard pulled out his gun and fired, witnesses told WREG.
The shooting happened at May Soccer Complex on Quince Road near Kirby Parkway where dozens of people go every weekend to enjoy the sport.
“We had a game before we finished at 6 o’clock,” one witness told WREG. “When I was walking to the other side, people started screaming and all.”
That gunshot turned the soccer field into a crime scene after witnesses said an argument broke out between those playing soccer and a security guard.
“The guy who asked me to call them, I said what happened,” said a witness, who called 911. “He said the security guard pulled a gun on a guy because he didn’t want to stop drinking.”
The man said those who come here have been told by some Memphis Police officers they can drink as long as they don’t cause problems. He said one guy told the security guard that, and when he refused to put down his beverage, security fired one shot into the ground near the man. Witnesses said he was not hurt, but the situation was alarming.
“A couple of weeks ago, another security guard pulled out a gun,” the witness said. “Never shot, but he pulled out a gun. I don’t think they can do that. They go through people’s stuff. They go through people’s coolers.”
Police confirmed they responded to a shots fired call at the location but gave no other information other than that they did not locate the victim.
