MEMPHIS, Tenn. — All eastbound lanes on I-40 east of Chelsea were shut down due to a shooting, according to the Memphis Police Department.
“You know, it’s the wild wild west all over again,” a man who lives near the interstate said.
He was sitting on his porch enjoying his afternoon before he was disturbed by gunfire.
“It’s close and it’s dangerous for us around through here. When they come up that interstate shooting, a bullet can come through one of our house and kill somebody, and it’s over,” he said.
Police say, a car crashed in the area of I-40 and Chelsea Sunday evening. The victim, who was driving the car, was shot prior to the crash.
The Incident Response Unit blocked the road, telling drivers to take another route.
Police monitored the highway as investigators searched the area, hoping to find where exactly the shooting took place.
“They have no respect for other people,” the neighbor said.
This isn’t the first time this happened on the highway.
In February, there were three shootings on I-40 within two weeks.
Neighbors near the area think people carrying guns are starting not to care where they are or who they hurt.
“I was raised four streets over, and you just see the neighborhood deteriorate. The younger they are, the worse it is,” another neighbor said.
The victim was transported to the hospital in non-critical condition. Police haven’t released any information about the shooter.
Traffic was re-opened just before 6 p.m.
Anyone with tips can call Crime Stoppers at (901)-528-CASH.
