COLDWATER, Miss. — Charges against a 31-year-old man accused of killing a young father of five inside a Mississippi home have been dropped.

District Attorney John Champion confirmed to WREG the charges have been dismissed against Otis Minor, leaving family and friends of Rodney Wilkins still without answers.

The young man was shot and killed inside a Parkway Street home in early April. His pregnant girlfriend was also shot and rushed to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis to undergo surgery.

“I knew one day he was going to walk through that door because I know he didn’t do it,” Minor’s mother said Monday.

The victim’s family members told WREG a man came to their home threatening to shoot them when the incident initially happened in early April.

Police said the victim called them but didn’t file a report.

Minor’s relatives said that was him, but he never acted on his threats. By the time the murder happened hours later, Minor was back home in Senatobia, they said.

“They missed a lot in the beginning,” said Linda Walker, Minor’s cousin.

Champion wouldn’t say why they dropped the charges, and though his relatives said they were relieved, they say they still had to pay $4,000 for a lawyer.

“We had to go through a lot to get this money. We might get it back, might not,” Walker said.

What’s more, his mom said she was her son was not the only one.

“I think it’s a bigger problem on young black men anyway, especially here in the South. They don’t have a chance,” she said.

WREG contacted Coldwater Police Monday but did not hear back.
