MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities are investigating after surveillance cameras caught three men stealing an ATM from a local gas station overnight.
The incident happened at the Valero store location at Crump Boulevard and Walnut around 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
WREG was on the scene shortly after it happened and talked to the owner who wants help finding the people responsible.
The owner, Sohel Islam, says he was alerted to the break in by his security company. What he discovered when he looked at the live security footage, which we have obtained, left him in shock.
Islam called police and saw part of the ATM machine in the parking lot when he got to the gas station
The video begins as the white van pulls away from the store, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the building and debris scattered across the sidewalk. A man wearing a mask crawls into the opening and pushes an ATM from the building to a second suspect outside.
The suspects struggled to pull the ATM.
In fact, the ATM is so heavy a third person got out of the van to help them load it into the vehicle.
The suspects loaded the ATM and took off before police arrived.
Part of the machine was left in the parking lot.
When the van crashed through the convenience store it didn’t just damage the outside. It also destroyed several displays inside.
The owner says that wasn’t going to stop him from opening the store back up.
He still says he’s heartbroken over the crime, however.
Islam has owned the corner grocery store for two years and is just trying to get by.
“I’m struggling with it. I’m trying to make a little money. It’s really sad for me,” he said.
He’s hoping the video will lead to some arrests and that his insurance and landlords will cover the damage.
