Man carjacked in Cooper-Young driveway by suspects with assault weapon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Cooper-Young man was carjacked by several suspects armed with an assault rifle who made off with his Mercedes

It happened around 5 a.m. Thursday near Cox Street and Southern Avenue.

The victim told police he was driving home from work early Thursday morning when a white truck began following him. Investigators say two men jumped out of that truck as he pulled in his driveway and tried to close the gate. men approached him.

A still shot from a surveillance video shows one of the suspects holding an assault weapon during a carjacking on Cox Street.

Both men were armed with an assault weapon, police said. They pointed it at him and then demanded his property, including his 2007 Mercedes Benz SL500.

The suspects reportedly got away in the victim’s black Mercedes and a white Toyota T100 truck.

On Friday morning, Memphis police officers pulled over a white Toyota near Lamar Avenue and Airways. Six people were taken into custody and police say a few of them may be responsible for the carjacking.

An officer who wasn’t part of the case happened to spot the white truck police say is connected to the crime. He chased the truck down and found those suspects inside.

No charges have been officially filed at this time. The victim was not hurt.

“It’s terrible,” neighbor Olibbie Wilchie said. “You work hard for stuff and accumulate stuff you want and somebody just come and take it. It’s hard.”

Neighbor John Shannon says crime is happening more and more in this neighborhood. He thinks the criminals are desperate.

“Taking cars is easy,” Shannon said. “You gonna work a job 50 hours a week and get that check. Check ain’t nothing. It be gone the same day.”
