Man shot while waiting at East Memphis stop light

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man was shot in his car Tuesday morning while waiting at an intersection at New Willow and Getwell Road.

The victim was waiting at the light at New Willow and Getwell Road just before 5 a.m. when someone walked up to him and opened fire.

Neighbors say he was able to drive a short distance down New Willow where he pulled into a stranger’s yard and called 911 for help. He was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Rusty Hamilton said he had no idea a blue Camaro was in his front yard until he saw all the flashing blue police lights through his front window.

“I said, is this just a wreck? They said no, this is a crime scene, somebody got shot,” Hamilton said. “The way he was screaming, he was in bad condition.”

There appeared to be bullet holes in his driver’s side window .

Police haven’t said what led up to the shooting, but were also canvassing an apartment complex near the intersection.

MPD’s Cyberwatch shows more 150 crimes reported within a mile of that location over the last month, including robberies, assaults and burglaries.

Hamilton says this is the second time a car has ended up in his yard. He’s says the driver came close but didn’t hit anything on his property.
