MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One woman was shot on Interstate 40 on Wednesday, and police do not know what led up to the shooting.

According to initial information, a driver was traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the Warford Street exit around noon when a shot was fired.

Memphis Police said a female victim was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Traffic heading eastbound in that area was detoured off the interstate as emergency responders worked the scene. I-40 northbound at Watkins was blocked, and I-40 eastbound at Warford was shut down.

Police said the suspect or suspects were possibly in a white Dodge vehicle, but they do not know the cause of the shooting or if the victim knows who pulled the trigger.

With thousands of people traveling on the interstate, the shooting is alarming. One man who talked to WREG said he was on his lunch break when he saw the crime scene and stopped to look.

“It’s like they’re playing a video game or something, like Grand Theft Auto or something. I mean it’s crazy. You know people going to work, or people just going about their normal every day activities, and to be shot, you know it’s crazy,” Solomon Preyer said.

This marks the eleventh interstate shooting in Memphis so far in 2019.
