NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The state Senate and House passed a bill that would extend the length of time a child rides in a car seat.
Under current Tennessee law, toddlers must be secured in a rear-facing seat until the age of 1.
After that, forward-facing seats until the age of 3 and a booster seat until age 8.
If approved by Gov. Bill Haslam, the bill would require parents to use a rear-facing seat until the age of 2, forward-facing seats until 5 and a booster seat until the child turns 12 or reaches 4-foot-9.
On Monday, the Senate passed the bill 32-0, while the House vote was 68-19.
The bill is now headed to Haslam.
