SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The President is safely on his way back to Washington after a rally in Southaven, Mississippi Tuesday night. But this was an important stop on his campaign “wish list.”
On Monday, he was in East Tennessee campaigning for Marsha Blackburn in her tight race against Phil Bredesen.
When Air Force One landed at Memphis International Airport he stepped off the plane with newly appointed Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who is also in a tight race with another popular Democrat.
The President knows the two seats are critical if he wants Republicans to maintain control in the United States Senate.
So he showed up in Southaven to rally the troops and energize his Republican base. But before he spoke with them, he spoke exclusively with WREG in a one-on-one interview.
Trump said he thought both Roger Wicker and Hyde-Smith were in a good position to keep their Senate seats. Hyde-Smith faces a tough challenge for her appointed seat from Republican Chris McDaniel and Democrat Mike Espy.
He also talked about himself and the current polarization of politics.
“We have a very unified party,” Trump said. “As you know, there are poll numbers showing me in the 90s, even sometimes the mid-90s in the Republican Party, which is a record. If you look at the Obama years, I think it was worse.”
He also stood by his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, calling him a fantastic person.
The election is Nov. 6.
