(Arlington, TN) It’s prom season and schools all across the Mid-South are drilling students about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Arlington High School re-created a car crash to show students how quickly a life can be lost.
It was a graphic scene, like something you’d never hope to experience.
It’s exactly why Arlington High students witnessed the mock car crash.
“It was really moving,” said Allie Bosi, a junior. “Three of my best friends were in [the mock crash]. I had no idea. Just knowing that could really happen is so real.”
School leaders wanted to show students first-hand the consequences of drinking and driving as well as texting and driving.
“You can tell a young person, teenager all you want, as many times as you want to tell them, but until they see it in real life situations, it [won’t] have an effect,” said Chris Duncan, Assistant Principal.
With Prom coming, Duncan hopes the demonstration will help students make smart choices, “Kids go out and they partake in different things, we know that. We just want to keep them from doing it while driving.”
The Shelby County Fire Department called in several of their resources from fire fighters, to paramedics even the helicopter wing to make a point.
If it saves one life, everyone says it’s worth it.
“It’s a big deal,” said Bosi. “It took a lot of effort to put this together so maybe they’ll think about it, think twice. It could save their life.”
Arlington High School will be hosting a question session to follow-up on the mock crash.
They will deal with issues like drinking and driving, drugs, and texting while driving. It’s Tuesday night at 6:00 in the auditorium.
