SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office raided businesses across Shelby County Wednesday. The sheriff’s office was looking for stores selling everything from drugs to expired food. Neighbors in Northhaven told WREG a raid lasted most of the day at a store there. Some said they have had problems with buying food there, only to see it was expired when they got it home. Tom Grandberry said his family has lived in Northhaven for 70 years, and he said as far as access to food and other items go, the Penny Pantry is all they have. “This store is really important since it’s the only store in the neighborhood,” he said. “Where else can we go? Some people don’t have a car to drive.” Wednesday it was swarmed with members of the Shelby County Sheriff’s office ALERT, or Area Law Enforcement Retailers Team. The sheriff’s office told WREG the team raided several businesses looking for stolen items, narcotics and even expired food. State search warrants were issued on five businesses and one residence. WREG was there for two, Penny Pantry and the Northside Food Market in North Memphis. But even though it was inconvenient having Penny Pantry shut down for the day, Grandberry said if anything was wrong there, it is worth it to get the problems fixed. “I’d really like for things to just go the right way, updated, good food. We’re in the woods, but we’re good people in these woods.” A total of six people were arrested during the raids. The lottery commission and revenue department still have ongoing investigations.
