MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kelvin Stokes is facing two counts of aggravated rape charges.

Police say the crime happened back in 2000 when a woman said Stokes and another man raped her inside her home after a party.

According to police documents, the victim’s rape kit was collected in 2000 but DNA testing wasn’t conducted until October 2013.

TBI agents found a match to her test in February of this year.

This is the another example of how important testing backlogged rape kits can be.

Earlier this month, the Memphis Police Department said it has sent 105 requests for indictments to the district attorneys office since it started having the backlog of kits tested.

Thousands of kits are still awaiting testing.

WREG first revealed the backlog of more than 12,000 rape kits more than five years ago.
