Rape suspect caught due to Facebook post

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man faced several charges, including rape, kidnapping and attempted murder, after a violent attack on a woman.

Police say 22-year-old Devin Coston kidnapped a woman last week outside a store on Oakwood Street in Memphis.

The victim told police she had just gotten into her car when Coston got in, pulled out a gun, and told her to drive.

The affidavit said a second suspect got in the back of the car after a short distance.

Police say Coston directed her to a field where she was raped, pistol whipped and beaten.

Coston is also accused of stealing cash along with clothes, jewelry, and a tracphone.

The woman said the suspect told her to stand up. When she did, she made a run for it. The suspect reportedly fired one shot.

“We heard the shot. I was in the back,” said Louis Sholar, who lives near the store. He said he went outside but did not see anything.

The Save Market, where Coston allegedly got into the woman’s car, shared the surveillance video with WREG.

You can see the woman walk to her white vehicle.

A man approaches her.

After a minute, she gets in the car, and the man walks around the back and gets in.

The car drives a very short distance, where it stops in front of a vacant lot.

Police said that later that night, the woman received several calls from an unknown number.

She searched the number in her “Hello” app, which connects numbers and Facebook pages.

Up popped an image of the man she said attacked her.

He also reportedly posted a video wearing the same clothes he was wearing at the time of the attack and possibly wearing the victim’s stolen watch.

The victim identified Coston for police.
