OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — People WREG spoke to in Olive Branch were concerned about their safety more than ever.
Two shootings a little more than a week apart was something they said you didn’t hear about often.
Now they said they want some answers.
Kristen Moody worked in Hospice and said she commuted everyday from Oxford for work.
The recent shootings in the area had her asking police what they were doing to keep her and her patients safe.
“With the two incidents that have happened, yes I think there needs to be something done for more crime prevention. Absolutely, because two in less than two weeks, who’s to say we won’t have another one?,” she said.
Mayor Scott Phillips told WREG the Street Crime Division, an under cover unit who fight crime, helped catch the criminals in the shooting Sunday and in the drive-by shooting last week.
The Police Department was taking other steps to reduce crime as well.
“Last year we added 5 additional officers,” he said. ” And we’ll be considering once again this year, this upcoming budget, to add an additional amount of officers. I’m not sure this time how many.”
James Wolfe owned Village Center Cleaners in the shopping center where police say shots were fired over the weekend.
He said a strong police presence was making a difference in the area.
He noticed more officers in the past two years.
“We`ll see them driving through the parking lot, usually by now you`ve seen them four or five times,” Wolfe said. “Here in the Kroger shopping center, maybe because we have more traffic coming through they come through more as well.”
Mayor Phillips said as the population continued to grow, so would the number of police officers.
