Recovery of human remains continues in Tipton County

TIPTON COUNTY, Tenn. — Tipton County investigators continued the process of removing human remains from the woods off Joe Joyner Road in Munford Thursday.

Officials received a tip late Tuesday night.

The severe weather had hindered efforts this week.

Tipton County Sheriff’s Office investigators logged several hours Thursday collecting evidence while THP assisted.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office provided some all-terrain vehicles and cadaver dogs.

“There were two neighborhood boys. It’s spring break. They were out, as young boys do, and they were cutting through the woods,” said Tipton County Chief Donna Turner.

She said the boys saw the remains.

Without touching anything, they returned home and told a parent.

When a male relative returned home from work, he phoned the Sheriff’s Office.

The remains were located near farm land.

Investigators recovered a skull which the Medical Examiner confirmed is human.

“We came back yesterday. We began again, and the severe weather shut us down again yesterday,” Turner said.

She said the remains had been there for some time and it was too soon to know about the person’s gender or identity.

“This is the first thing I’ve heard of it, and I can’t imagine how long it’s been there or what happened,” said neighbor Thomas Hayes.

“At this particular time, our goal is to recover all of the human remains and for one family to get some type of closure for them,” Turner said.

WREG reached out to the region’s Medical Examiner for any additional information but we have not heard back as of Thursday afternoon.
