Restaurant owners giving their profits to help women in Colombia

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new restaurant in Memphis is giving its profits to those in need.

The owners of Arepas Deliciosas on Summer will use the money to help women in Colombia get an education, job and home.

A husband and wife opened an authentic Colombian restaurant to make money, of course, but it wasn’t for themselves though.

They’re giving 100% of the profits to help women in Colombia.

“You see people, beautiful girls, but they are just thrown into the street. They don’t have hope,” said co-owner Blanca Simpson.

Simpson is from Colombia and has seen far too many women turn to the streets.

She told WREG she wants to build a home for them, provide transportation to school, and also teach them different trades.

“It’s to bring people out of the poverty and to help them,” she said.

The Simpsons are working with their church to make it happen.

They also did similar projects for children in Honduras and called it pure joy.

They hope their enthusiasm is contagious and inspires other businesses to give back to those in need.

“Maybe if a business can say, ‘Hey, I’m going to sponsor one child.’ If they sponsor one child, that’s a great thing,” said Simpson.

Arepas Deliciosas’ grand opening is Saturday, October 31 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Simpsons said once they start saving up, they’ll start construction.

Arepas Deliciosas is located at 3698 Summer Avenue.
