CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you want to eat at Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Charlotte, you’re going to have to play by the rules.
The restaurant posted a sign with the following conditions, WSOC reported:
- Take your hoodie down
- Pull your pants up
- Finish your phone conversation
- Marijuana smell not allowed

The sign has been there for years, but now that it’s more visible, it’s caused some controversy.
Restaurant owner Martin Tanaka told WSOC customers often share a table with others at the hibachi-style restaurant, so he put up the sign so everyone shows respect. He also said other customers have been bothered by others’ marijuana odor, so he recently added that line on the sign.
Many customers like it or at least aren’t bothered by what the sign asks.
“It’s actually the best response we’ve ever had,” Tanaka said. “More people think that more places should do it.”
But not everyone is a fan.
A nearby resident told WSOC it seemed like the restaurant was making a comment about race.
Tanaka said he has asked people of all races to leave for refusing to follow the rules.
