MEMPHIS, Tenn. — RISE Memphis is preparing to begin a new session of its “Save Up” program, which helps people in need in the community.

WREG has previously reported about how the program teaches finance management and helps people prepare for major purchases like homes.

The organization has a “Wall of Homes” in its office, showing pictures of homes their students purchased.

“Learning more about how to handle your finances not only helps you and your family, but it helps the community, because then you’re able to qualify for homes,” Program Coordinator Karen Madlock said.

There has been a great deal of talk in Memphis recently about how to address juvenile violence. Many people have pointed the finger at parents and the environment where children grow up.

Madlock said the program helps improve families by helping parents save for homes and higher education.

RISE matches funds students save two-to-one up to a certain amount. For example, if a student saves $1, the organization puts $2 in an account.

The course is six weeks. There are many requirements for students, such as the fact that they must be employed and eligible for an Earned-Income Tax Credit.

Madlock said the organization only accepts applications at orientation sessions.

There is one Thursday night at 5:45 at RISE. It’s located on the second floor at 2650 Thousand Oaks Boulevard.
