Road crews prepare for winter weather

TIPTON COUNTY, Tenn. — TDOT crews are trying to stay one step ahead of the winter weather.

They spent all day treating thousands of miles worth of highways, interstates and bridges in West Tennessee.

Crews will work throughout the night in case road conditions get bad.

“Get ahead of the snow and ice,” said Steve Lemmon with TDOT. “We have been putting down salt brine on all of our state roads.”

TDOT said it hit the roads early Tuesday morning.

About 170 trucks fanned out and sprayed a salt mixture on 9,600 miles worth of roads.

“The flyover especially. All of our Mississippi River bridges. Any bridges that are high in the air,” said Lemmon.

More than 300 TDOT workers pitched in.

Some of them will stay overnight too and tackle trouble spots that pop up while you’re sleeping.

TDOT has 29,000 tons of salt and 438,000 gallons of salt brine on hand.
