NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Halloween is just a few spooky nights away, and that means it’s time to start thinking about safety for you and your family.
That’s why the American Red Cross has released its tips for having a spooktacular evening with your little minions.
Costume Safety
First, parents need to be aware of costume safety.
Every parent wants their kids to look amazing on Halloween, but that shouldn’t compromise safety.
Instead of using masks, why not try face makeup instead, suggested the Red Cross.
Masks will allow your children to see better as they are walking over surfaces and while on busy streets.
A word of caution for those who use makeup: make sure to test it on your child’s skin before the big day.
A bad reaction will not be a fun thing to deal with on Halloween.
Also, parents should add reflective gear to their child’s costume.
This doesn’t necessarily have to mess up the child’s costume.
Most stores, especially specialty sports stores, carry reflective gear that can be worn around the wrists or ankles.
If that’s not feasible for your child, they even have stick-ons you can place on their backs or their bags.
If all else fails, a good ole flashlight or glow sticks can do the trick.
Safe Trick-or-Treating
The Red Cross also offered up some tips when it comes to the safety of your party while you trick-or-treat.
It is always a good idea to plan out a route beforehand so everyone in your party knows where you’ll be, and never go inside a home to receive candy.
While your on this route, it’s also important that you remain on the sidewalks as much as you can.
If it’s unavoidable, it’s also a good idea to walk towards oncoming traffic to monitor the traffic.
