School custodian alleges company is late with paychecks

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some school custodians reached out to WREG, claiming they received last week’s paychecks late. They said they wanted answers.

Shelby County Schools contracts with GCA, which provides custodians. That means GCA is responsible for paying these workers.

One custodian said her paycheck was due Friday. She received it Tuesday afternoon when she arrived for her shift.

“I really love my job. I really love what I do. But if you’re not going to pay me on time, that break my motivation,” she said. The woman asked WREG to conceal her identity.

A GCA spokesperson had not returned WREG’s phone call as of 4 p.m. A worker said off-camera the winter weather delayed shipping companies, which affected the paychecks’ arrival time.

The custodian WREG spoke with has worked in this business for more than 30 years, though she became a part of GCA last year. She said she has additional concerns about the company, including an alleged lack of sanitation supplies at times.
