MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Monday marked the start of Shelby County Schools’ early online registration, allowing parents to register their kids earlier than ever before.
Even though many SCS families might be focused on end-of-the-year homework assignments or exams, the district said it is not too soon to set their sights on next school year.
“We want our students in school on the very first day of school,” said SCS spokesperson Kristin Tallent.
“I mean it would be nicer to get it done earlier,” said parent Charles Johnson. He said he plans to take advantage of early registration and hopes other parents in the district do the same, citing the seriousness of truancy issues in the district.
“It also allows the district more time to plan for the next school year. Of course, we have a lot of students in the district, so getting bus routes figured out and also then getting students their schedules on time, it just allows us a lot more time to do those sorts of things well,” Tallent said.
Last year was the first year of a completely online registration process.
At that time, some parents complained about not having their children’s necessary snapcodes to complete registration.
The district hopes for a smoother year, saying snapcodes went out on report cards last month and again via email last week.
