MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Even though summer vacation is only a week away, Shelby County Schools is already gearing up for next year’s registration.
For the first time ever, registration will be fully online.
“We want everyone to get online and not in line,” said SCS Director of Attendance and Discipline Angela Hargrave.
In the past, registrations took place on a single day in the summer.
Parents had to visit the school they were registering their child(ren) to fill out paperwork.
“Takes a lot of time. Many parents would have to take off from work and spend lots of time, and if you have multiple children, you have to fill out a packet of papers for each child,” Hargrave said.
Now, schools will contact returning students’ parents with a snapcode per child.
Parents will enter those snapcodes online to register their children.
New students will begin registration online too.
“I’m more of a hands on person,” said parent Debra Bonds.
Bonds liked the registration process at it was, because she said wait times were not bad at her child’s elementary school.
Still, Bonds said she understands the need to update.
“It’ll be really great for parents, because working different hours, I think it will take the stress out of that, just being able to do it when you’re able to do it,” Bonds said.
Not all parents have computers at home.
The district said it’s working to send parents and community partners information about registration.
The information will help parents learn more about places to use a computer, like district locations, libraries, and churches.
SCS will also provide information letting parents know where and when they can get assistance registering online.
Registration will run from July 13 through August 4.
SCS said people with internet access on their phones can register their children that way too.
SCS said now is a good time to make sure schools have parents’ correct contact information, so parents may receive their snapcodes.
