SCS proposing big budget cuts for upcoming school year

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Superintendent Dorsey Hopson is set to announce big budget cuts for the Shelby County Schools district next year.

More than $50 million is set to be cut in the proposal which would include a decrease in benefits for educators and staff, the closure of an undisclosed number of school, and a reduction in summer school offerings.

In addition, those parents who live close the schools in what’s called the Parent Responsibility Zone would be responsible for taking their children to class instead of putting them on the bus.
