MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Schools hosted “Gear Up 4 School Day” Tuesday, encouraging parents to register their children and prepare for back-to-school.
“We’ve been kind of putting things off all summer, kind of enjoying summer, and we just started yesterday with the supply list,” said Treadwell Elementary School parent Gladis Arevalo.
Her daughter will be in kindergarten next week.
She took advantage of “Gear Up 4 School Day” in order to get ready.
“We’re still trying to do the whole registration on the computer and that took me a minute,” she said.
There are still thousands of Shelby County School parents who have not yet completed registration.
Tuesday afternoon, SCS estimated there are about 63,000 students registered.
That is more than half, but there is still a ways to go.
“Clothes shopping for the uniforms, the shoes, the socks, of course the huge supply list,” said Treadwell grandparent Marilyn Turpin, noting back-to-school chores.
“Gear Up 4 School Day” is also a chance to meet school staff and ease some back-to-school stress.
Treadwell also hosted a Healthy Kids Clinic.
Groups, like the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, donated some back-to-school basics.
“We’ve donated 600 polo shirts for students here,” said Basileus of Sigma Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Richard Thompson.
“One of the things that parents typically forget to do is to first of all get everything on the supply list, so we’ve done that. We have supplies for them to pick up today, and also they forget to get the uniform shirts, so today, we’re giving away a uniform shirt to every child that enrolls,” said Treadwell Principal Dr. Tanisha Heaston.
If you have not yet registered your child, SCS invites you to visit its website to complete the process.
