MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Summer is over for tens of thousand of Shelby County students who headed back to school Monday morning.
Last year, Shelby County Schools was plagued with bus problems during the first weeks of school.
The district reported no major bus issues today.
One parent called WREG after her son’s bus to Kate Bond Middle was nearly an hour late.
The district blamed it on a substitute teacher and said the problem had been addressed.
Tammy Campbell said her kids live far enough away they can take the bus to Alton Elementary, but she wasn’t taking any chances on the first day and decided to take them to school herself.
“I didn’t want any problems. I’m not saying that they have any, but I just didn’t want any problems. So, I just went ahead and dropped them off this morning,” said Campbell.
Last week, Durham did a test run of bus routes to make sure students got to school on time. Parents are hoping the practice pays off.
“I’m really hoping for a good school this year. They had an okay school year last year, and I’m looking forward to it being a good school year this year,” said Campbell.
