(Shelby County, TN) Thousands of W2 forms were sent out with the wrong information, and nobody seems to know why.
The district took to social media and even called teachers late Friday night to warn them not to file their taxes.
It said teachers who worked for the former Memphis City Schools were the only people affected.
Monday, SCS didn’t want to talk with us on camera, but said it couldn’t if it was a technical error or something someone did at the district.
“As of now, I haven’t received anything, and I haven’t heard anything. As you can tell, I am a little frustrated about it,” said one SCS teacher who was willing to talk to WREG anonymously.
He was afraid he’d get in trouble for speaking out.
He said he was already asleep Friday when he got an automated voicemail telling him not to use his W2 form from the old Memphis City School District.
In a letter sent late Friday night, the district admitted it listed the wrong numbers for retirement and health benefits.
“I was planning on filing my taxes Saturday, and if I had, I would have faced penalties from the IRS,” said the teacher.
SCS said it fixed the problem, and teachers should expect new forms by mid to the end of the week.
Those affected tell WREG the administration sent an update saying the process is already underway.
“One time I was late getting paid, and it took a week and a half to get paid, so I don’t know what we have begun the process means,” said the teacher.
SCS said teachers and staff who have always worked for Shelby County Schools were not affected.
