MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Schools issued a warning to parents and students about a man who seen trying to lure a female student into his car.
In a statement, school officials say “a man driving a white Kia vehicle has been following students in various school communities, trying to lure students to his car.”
Police later confirmed a the man tried to lure a female student into his car near Hamilton High School Tuesday, Feb. 6.
“I would hate for that to happen to anybody’s child, I don’t care who it is. You don’t want your child disappearing,” said Llyth Thompson.
Thompson, a parent of a 5th and 8th grader says it only takes one second when a parent isn’t paying attention.
“It’s so many more tactics that people are using out here and it’s frightening and I just have to stay more vigilant,” said Thompson.
Officials say the warning isn’t meant to scare anyone, “We just want to share this information with families so we can all be extra cautious.”
The SCS Team is now working with police to make sure schools get more support before and after class.
“It makes you feel good, like a better parent that you can send your kids to school and don’t have to worry about anything but when you send them to school and have to worry about predators, its crazy,” said Carl Taylor, a parent of a 1st & 2nd grader.
“I tell my kids try to stay with somebody especially when you walking by yourself, my kids normally don’t walk by themselves but they pretty much look out for trouble and they know not to get in a car with a stranger,” said Taylor.
The statement ends by telling parents to contact police if their child has seen any suspicious behavior.
No arrests have been made.
