MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced John Checchia, the deputy who was arrested for DUI, has resigned.

He reportedly resigned on Friday.

According to reports, a police officer noticed a black Chevrolet pickup truck had not moved through two green lights at the intersection of Macon Road and Germantown Parkway back in April.

That’s when the officer discovered the 27-year-old asleep, with his truck still in drive and his foot on the brake.

Police put the vehicle in park, woke Checchia and gave him a sobriety test.

He was charged with DUI and refusing to submit to a sobriety test.

The Sherrif’s Office said he had been relieved of duty with pay.

He had been with the sheriff’s office since 2012.
