MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A carjacking suspect is in custody after opening fire on Shelby County deputies when they went to arrest him in southwest Memphis Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect crashed the stolen car on Elder Road near Daggett around 3 p.m., knocking down at least two street lamps.
“This lady told me that the dude was doing doughnuts and they got behind him and he shot at the police,” said Gloria Jones.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has not reported any injuries to their deputies but a source tells WREG that at least one squad car was hit by gunfire.
A man who was working nearby told WREG he heard two or three gunshots.
SCSO said the suspect was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition for an injury sustained during the crash.
He was wanted for a carjacking at East Shelby Drive and Hacks Cross around 1 p.m.
WREG is told two men intentionally rear-ended the victim’s car and then one of the men drove off in it. The victim’s phone was still in his car and law enforcement was able to ping its location, according to the source.
The sheriff’s office hasn’t released any information regarding a possible second suspect.
