MEMPHIS, Tenn.– A second birthday will be held for Harmony Jones.
She’s the little girl who received a letter from a classmate that said her dad wouldn’t let her go to Harmony’s party because she is black.
Harmony’s father, Chris Jones, said all the media attention has been humbling.
“More than anything we have just used all this attention as a learning tool for our daughter and for ourselves,” said Jones.
He said as hurtful as it initially was, the letter has actually done some good.
Harmony received the letter from a friend at school when she asked the little girl to come to her 10th birthday.
The letter reads in part, “Maybe I will not be able to go to your birthday sleepover because my dad will not let me go because you are black.”
After the story had been aired on WREG, it made national news.
“A lot of people on Facebook contacting me, people in general, you know walking into work, people at church, asking me about the situation, it’s been kinda surreal,” said Jones.
The Black Expo will host a surprise birthday party for Harmony this weekend, and it’s something that Harmony’s dad is grateful for.
“It gives us a chance to reaffirm our love for our daughter and show the world that not everybody is bad,” he said.
Jones said he hopes people continue to learn from the letter.
“Racism still lives and unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere, so we just have to learn how to come together and treat each other with respect,” he said.
He said he and his wife have attempted to contact the parents of Harmony’s friend, but have never heard anything back.
