(DeSoto Co., MS) A second suspect has been detained in the murder of a Mississippi State University student, according to MSU Police Chief Georgia Lindley.
Chief Lindley said that just before 9 p.m. on Monday, a second suspect turned himself in to U.S. marshals at the urging of his family members. He was taken into custody at Jackson, MS apartment complex. His name has not yet been confirmed.
Lindley said she believed he was at the Hinds County Jail on a capital murder charge.
On Sunday, sources tipped authorities that 21-year-old Mason Perry Jones may be on a bus from Jackson to Memphis.
A regional fugitive task force detained Jones at the Memphis bus station on Airways Blvd. Sunday night.
He first spent the night at the DeSoto County Jail, on a warrant for robbery in the Jackson area. Monday afternoon, MSU Police issued a warrant for capital murder, at which point Jones was transported from DeSoto County to the Oktibbeha County Jail in Starkville.
One suspect remains at large.
Chief Lindley said that all three will be charged with capital murder. In this case, she said they are accused of murder while committing another felony.
She said they were selling drugs and that drugs were found at the scene of the crime.
The victim, 21-year-old John Sanderson of Madison, MS, was found shot at Evans Hall, an all-male dormitory on the MSU campus.
The school will plant a memorial tree in his honor.
