Secret Service: No guns allowed in GOP convention

WASHINGTON — The Secret Service says guns will not be allowed inside the GOP National Convention.

The agency said federal law allows them to prevent weapons from locations their protectees are visiting, reports CNN.

“Individuals determined to be carrying firearms will not be allowed past a predetermined outer perimeter checkpoint, regardless of whether they possess a ticket to the event,” a Secret Service spokesman said in a statement.

Only law enforcement working with the agency at the Quicken Loans Arena will be allowed to have firearms inside.

The carrying of weapons became an issue just recently when pro-gun activists petitioned for the right to carry inside the arena.

“In order to ensure the safety of your supporters, delegates and all attendees at the convention in July, you must call upon the RNC to rectify this affront to our Second Amendment freedoms and insist upon a suspension of the Quicken Loans Arena’s unconstitutional ‘gun-free zone’ loophole,” the petition reads.

The petition was posted online a week ago at Change.org by someone whose user profile has since been deleted.

By Monday afternoon, it had over 45,000 signatures.
