MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police need your help finding a trio of thieves accused of stealing former University of Memphis basketball player Michael Wilson’s Sweet Sixteen ring and his son’s laptop.
Police released security footage of the men leaving the crime scene in a parking garage next to the Westin on Beale Street.
Wilson told WREG he hasn’t watched the footage, and he doesn’t know if he wants to.
“It’s just bittersweet,” he said. “I’m still not going to let it ruin the great weekend that I had.”
Wilson was in town getting his diploma last weekend, two decades after his college career ended.
He was staying at the Westin and gave his car to valet. When he got his car back, he noted the gold-and-diamond ring and computer weren’t there.
Tiger fans aren’t happy either.
“It probably was very sentimental to him. For him to lose it, I just feel sorry for him,” said fan Ericka Anderson.
“My sympathy goes out to him, and I apologize for whoever did that, and I apologize for the city of Memphis,” said fan Marlin Brown.
Wilson said the support means a lot.
“I didn’t realize how many people still cared. I received a lot of encouragement and a lot of feedback from the people of Memphis saying how much they cared,” he said.
Wilson told WREG there was no damage to his car and thinks a door was left open.
We called and emailed Westin’s corporate office but have yet to hear back.
This isn’t the first time someone has reported a theft from a car at the Westin. In December, toys meant for children at St. Jude were reported stolen from a garage used by the hotel’s valet service.
