Senator Corker tries to ease fears of losing SNAP benefits

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than 260,000 people in Shelby County rely on help from the government to put food on the table.

But those families could be left in the dark if the government shuts down on Thursday.

“The way I work, I don’t have the best of a job. So that’s just something I look for,” said Sherry Davis.

People like Davis worried about making ends meet, and rely on SNAP benefits.

With federal negotiations continuing up until the deadline, we asked Senator Bob Corker what’s being done about it.

“Look. We have a procedural vote tonight on the senate floor. Wednesday we’ll pass what’s called a CR which would extend government funding through December the 11th or 12th. So people here in Shelby County should have — from my standpoint anyway — no concerns about that happening,” he said.

Even if we get to December and Congress is still having issues, Corker told WREG they’ll likely cut other programs before deciding to cut SNAP benefits.
