BARTLETT, Tenn. — Four more guns are in the wrong hands on Mid-South streets Wednesday.
Bartlett Police confirmed three cars were broken into over the weekend and four guns were stolen.
One of the victims agreed to speak with WREG to prevent this from happening to others. He said he did not want to be identified because the crook or crooks are still out there.
“My stomach dropped. My heart sank,” he said.
The gun owner recalled the moment he saw the holster in his car was empty Sunday. The rag he used to cover the handle of the gun was on the seat.
“I walked out my garage door, and one of my bullets was on the ground,” he said. “The worst thing that can happen is for your gun to be missing and somebody possibly get hurt with your weapon.”
He is not alone.
Police reports showed that all three cars that were broken into over the weekend were parked at home. Police reports suggested at least two of the three cars were left unlocked.
The man we spoke with admitted he left his car unlocked because he felt his neighborhood was very safe.
Police got calls about a stolen handgun on Sunny Meadows Road, as well as a handgun and revolver on High Plains Road, which is a street over. They got a call about another stolen handgun on Patricia Ellen Drive.
Police said it is common for crooks to walk around and try opening car doors, searching for the ones left unlocked.
Bartlett Police Capt. Richard Berryman said it is always possible car thefts like these could be related, but investigators are not sure yet who did it.
The man we spoke to said he is hopeful there could be video out there that would show who was lurking in the area over the weekend.
Bartlett Police said between the start of the year and July 7, they received 17 reports of car break-ins that involved at least one stolen firearm. In most of those cases, the cars were unlocked.
