MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An intentionally-set fire damaged several units at the Raines Court apartment complex, located in the 1700 block of East Raines in Whitehaven, Tuesday afternoon.
The fire department says the fire was set in two units. Anyone with information that could help investigators should call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
No one was injured. The Red Cross provided assistance for two families.
Ladarrius Matthews stared at his gutted apartment in shock.
“I was in the apartment next door on the other side, but I saw the smoke in the air,” he said.
Matthews says he was in the process of moving out of this apartment, but he lost everything Tuesday.
He described the moment he first saw the flames.
“I couldn’t think anymore. I just went blank. I just went blank,” he said.
Neighbors say they got the call and came running home. Syntyshe Jenkins’ son was home with a babysitter. She’s thankful neighbors home with their kids on spring break were able to call for help.
“Thank God someone was here because it could have caught and been way worse,” she said.
Some contractors doing work on the complex say they saw a suspicious person walk by the area right before the fire got started.
Neighbors say that wouldn’t be the first time something suspicious went down on this side of the complex.
Jenkins said, “They back there selling drugs, and shooting over there. And don’t nobody supposed to be staying over there.”
More than 40 firefighters responded to the fire.
Damage was estimated at $17,400 for the structure and $3,000 for its contents.
