(Memphis) Forty-Three year old Johnny Bowie is facing charges after Memphis Police say he took a woman into the woods where he beat, choked and raped her.
“You are scared to come out your door, because you never know you can laugh and talk with. You never know who they are, if you have never seen them before,” said Miranda Jones who lives feet away from where the attack happened Monday night.
Memphis Police say the victim reported the rape, and a short time later they returned to the wooded area where the alleged rape happened, and found Bowie there with his pants down.
Jones and other neighbors recognize Bowie from the neighborhood, but they did not know he is listed as a violent sex offender after a rape in 2008.
According to the TBI Sex Offender website, Bowie checked in as required last month, but the address he gave does not exist.
According to Kristin Helm from the TBI, it’s up to Memphis Police to verify addresses of sex offenders in Memphis.
MPD said there was no one available to comment on the issue today.
Bowie remains behind bars and is due in court September 10th.
